SUMMARY:American Interiority: The Life and Legacy of Peter Crippen
DESCRIPTION:The Huntington African American Museum is proud to present American Interiority: The Life of Peter Crippen\, on view at Kasher Gallery & Studios in Northport\, NY from May 8 to June 22. \nThis exhibition grows from the preservation of the historic Peter Crippen House\, originally built in 1657 and later home to Peter Crippen\, a freed slave and one of Huntington’s first Black landowners. For nearly 150 years\, the house stood as a symbol of resilience\, migration\, and community on Long Island. \nFollowing years of advocacy\, the structure was carefully deconstructed to preserve its materials and stories. Archaeological excavations have uncovered artifacts dating back to the 1800s and earlier\, offering a rare glimpse into the lives connected to this site. \nThrough these discoveries\, American Interiority invites visitors to reflect on history\, memory\, and identity. Its run coincides with Juneteenth\, deepening the opportunity to consider freedom\, legacy\, and the ongoing effort to fully understand American history. \nWe are honored to partner with Kasher Gallery & Studios and look forward to welcoming you. \nRSVP
