HUNTINGTON AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSEUM
Before There Are Walls, There Are Stories
The Huntington African American Museum is already taking shape, bringing people, histories, and communities together as we work toward establishing our permanent home.
Through historical research, collections development, community partnerships, and plans for educational programs and exhibitions, we are building a museum that begins in Huntington and reaches across New York State.
The doors to our permanent home have yet to open. But there is already a place for you in our story.
A Museum Without Walls. A History Without Boundaries.
Who says a museum needs walls to bring history to life?
Our Museum Without Walls approach takes history beyond a traditional museum setting and into the places where people live, learn, and gather. Through community partnerships, storytelling, educational programs, and future pop-up exhibitions, HAfAM will create opportunities to discover and explore African American history across Huntington, Long Island, and New York State.
Be part of what we're building. Share your family's history, introduce us to a community organization, propose a partnership, or join us at an upcoming event. Your stories, ideas, and participation can help shape the Museum's future.
Our permanent home is still to come. Our story is already unfolding.
To understand New York's history, we must tell the stories that have too often been left out.
Founded in 1653, Huntington was an agricultural and maritime community connected to the trade, commerce, and social forces that shaped colonial New York. Enslaved Africans lived and labored here, and generations of African Americans subsequently helped shape the region's economic, political, social, and cultural life.
Huntington's history reflects a much larger American story, one of enslavement and emancipation, migration and opportunity, resistance and achievement. These experiences connect Long Island to the people, movements, and defining moments that shaped New York State and the nation.
The Huntington African American Museum will bring these histories into sharper focus, using Huntington's past to illuminate the broader African American experience and reveal connections across communities, generations, and geography.
The story begins in Huntington. It belongs to all of New York.
The Huntington African American Museum is already taking shape as a Museum Without Walls, building community connections and laying the groundwork for educational programs, exhibitions, and cultural experiences across Huntington, Long Island, and New York State.
Plans for our permanent home are advancing through site development, architectural planning, institutional partnerships, and fundraising. While a groundbreaking and opening date have not yet been established, each milestone brings us closer to creating a lasting home for the stories, histories, and experiences we are committed to preserving and sharing.
